The choice of ozone was based on the fact that it is more effective than other disinfectants against a wider spectrum of microorganisms.

Ozone is not stable over the long term and is therefore not produced and marketed in cylinders like other industrial gases. It is generally prepared at the time of use through devices called ozonizers which convert oxygen in the air into ozone through electrical discharges.
